April 2020

GARY, Ind.—April 7, 2020— Through a partnership with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, in cooperation with the Lake Area United Way and the Indiana National Guard, Spectacle Entertainment’s Majestic Star Casino assisted with food distribution across the region by providing food boxes to area families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The humanitarian effort took place at the Majestic Star Casino parking lot on Tuesday, April 7 through mobile distribution, and served 300 households in the Northwest Indiana area. Governor Eric Holcomb deployed the Indiana National Guard to assist at distribution sites throughout the state.

Majestic Star Casino was the first large business in the area to help distribute goods through the “big business mobile market” venture, targeting large businesses in the region. Tuesday’s effort provided food boxes for approximately 250 Majestic Star team members, as well as additional area families.

“The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is committed to continuing to serve those who are food insecure. And unfortunately, because of COVID-19, we are seeing a lot of our friends and neighbors who are displaced workers and may be losing out on some income now. We want to make sure we’re also there for those who may not have had a need before,” stated Victor Garcia, executive director of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. “It’s so important that we work with major employers like Majestic Star so that we can offer the large mobile market to employees that might be struggling during this time.”

Majestic Star Director of Regulatory Compliance and Food Bank board member Rachel McDermott helped coordinate the effort and said, “It was a natural fit to partner with the Food Bank during this trying time. When Victor reached out to me, I knew Spectacle would be ‘All-IN’ to help our team members, as well as the community.”

Each box included fresh produce, packaged goods, proteins, and other miscellaneous items; and provided enough food to prepare approximately twenty to twenty-two meals.

“At a time when the news is not always good, we’re grateful and honored to share something positive with our team members and our community,” expressed Spectacle Entertainment Executive Vice President and General Manager Jahnae Erpenbach. “We join the Food Bank in thanking Governor Holcomb, the Lake Area United Way and the Indiana National Guard for rallying together to serve the people of our state throughout these challenging days. ”

“And, we stand with Indiana in our effort to help flatten the curve through social distancing. We’re #INthistogether,” Erpenbach added.

GARY, Ind.—March 6, 2020— Spectacle Entertainment’s Majestic Star Casino Food and Beverage Director, John Erb, is dedicated to his work with Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana. Erb currently serves as a board member, with a focus on the operation committee, concentrating on the review of monthly functions for the organization.

As part of his dedication to the community, Erb participated in this year’s Meals on Wheels “Dine with the Chefs” gala on Sunday, March 1. The benefit, held at the Avalon Manor in Merrillville, marked the 20th year of the fundraising celebration. According to the organization’s Business Development Manager, Jodi Bella, a total of $90,000 was raised for Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana.

Several area chefs participated in the event, presenting a variety of menu items, from soup to dessert. To kick-off the day, Majestic Star Casino Director of Food and Beverage John Erb, Executive Chef Marvin McDaniel and Sous Chef Josh Figueroa offered the group Creole-style hushpuppies and maple-glazed pork belly appetizers. Adding a bit of flare and fanfare to the occasion, Majestic Star Casino Sales & Catering Manager, Malcolm Jones, served as Master of Ceremonies at the upscale affair.

Erb, known around Majestic Star as “Mr. Positive,” has a habit of helping out those in need. He and his team recently prepared and provided hot meals for 40 residents of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Gary, after an issue with the facility’s kitchen.

And, Erb takes his work with Meals on Wheels to heart by driving the Merrillville route every Monday. Over the past six months he has spent several hours each week delivering hot meals and doing wellness checks on the elderly and homebound. During visits to local homes, he often helps by picking up the mail, taking out the trash and assisting with other chores.

“Participating in ‘Dine with the Chefs’ was a great honor for us,” stated Erb. “I’m proud to partner with the folks at Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana. The work done by this organization is about more than providing a meal, it’s also about a friendly visit and a wellness check on those who may be home-bound, elderly, ill or disabled. I truly believe those we serve look forward to seeing me every Monday. I know we can help make someone’s life a little brighter, and that’s a wonderful thing.”

Since 1977, Meals on Wheels has delivered nearly eight million meals to seniors, other adults and children throughout Northwest Indiana. For many Americans, Meals on Wheels is the difference between seniors remaining in their homes and needing to relocate to a nursing facility.

“At Majestic Star, we take our commitment to the community very seriously. Our company’s giving strategy is ‘ALL-IN.’ We’re dedicated to making a difference whenever we can, and I’m pleased to help make a difference through Meals on Wheels,” Erb added.

About Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana: Our mission is to deliver meals to those in need with the support of community volunteers. Research proves that when seniors have the right support, they gain greater quality of life, need fewer hospital stays and live longer. On returning to their home, Tito Jackson stated, “Fifty years ago, five brothers named Marlon, Michael, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie, grew up in a tiny little house in Gary, where we all played, shoveled snow and recorded a song called ‘I Want You Back.’ It’s so important to our family that we are here now, going through the lay of the land as we help invest in revitalizing Gary.”

Hard Rock International donated $20,000 to the Gary Club. Walmart contributed $15,000 and assembled and delivered the bikes, and Spectacle Entertainment hosted the dedication on Jan. 8. Spectacle Entertainment and Spectacle team members also contributed $10,000 for a holiday party held at the Boys & Girls Club on Dec. 19 that featured food provided by Strack & Van Til Food Market, as well as gifts, coats, gloves and hats for the children.

“Every child should have a bike and we’re honored to help make that happen,” said Keith Richards, Walmart market manager for Northwest Indiana.

This event is a small example of their commitment to quality, professionalism and local community engagement.”

Jackson concluded, “We want to do more for this great city, in partnership with Spectacle Entertainment, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and Mayor Jerome Prince. We are here to talk about ways for better economic development and resources for families and our youth in Gary; how the Jacksons can help change the economic landscape of our birthplace; more jobs, more technology, better education, even music and art programs. And more importantly where our mother’s heart lies, in scholarship programs to create educational opportunities for our next generation. It’s great to be back to see what we can do together for the place our family will love forever.”

by Lourdes Castellanos, Communications & Marketing Manager – Humane Indiana
Thursday, November 14, 2019 – Northwest Indiana —Some businesses support animal shelters with supply drives of dog or cat food. However, one local business offered their support by wearing JEANS!

Humane Indiana hosted its 27th Annual Paws in the Park on Saturday, September 28th. The fundraising event benefits homeless pets at its shelter located at 421 45th Avenue in Munster, IN. While the day started with a few light sprinkles at Munster Community Park, pet-owners were not deterred. Hundreds of animal-loving families lined up for the animal-friendly, one-mile walk to show their support.

However, not everyone who supported the event was at the park. Majestic Star Casino created an online team Majestic Tail Blazers to help raise funds in support of the event. Christi Hardesty, Director of Marketing at Majestic Star, quickly realized work schedules would prohibit interested staff supporters. So she came up with another plan. “Our team wanted to support but couldn’t all be at the event, so we thought JEANS! Who doesn’t love a jean day at work when you wear a uniform every day?” Hardesty explained. Hardesty took their team efforts even farther and worked with Majestic’s Human Resources Department to make donating simple for participants. “We gave them the opportunity to donate $5 for one jean day or $20 to participate in five jean days,” she said.

More than 200 Majestic Star employees and vendors participated in the fundraising promotion. “We were elated that so many staff members participated and more importantly that we were able to support Humane Indiana’s shelter animals,” Hardesty added. But the giving didn’t end there. In August, Majestic Star also hosted its Annual Putting For Patriots Golf Outing at White Hawk Country Club in Crown Point. “One-hundred percent of those proceeds are dedicated to helping our nation’s military heroes,” Hardesty said. The funds were donated to help veterans adopt a pet at Humane Indiana’s animal shelter. The pay-it-forward plan will help veterans with adoption fees at the shelter. “This was the perfect opportunity for us to help two of Majestic Star’s passions – VETS and pets,” Hardesty added. Today Hardesty and her team presented Humane Indiana with a check for $10,731 for their combined fundraising efforts for the organization.

“We’re extremely grateful to Majestic Star and their team for their efforts and generosity,” said Lisa Carpenter, Humane Indiana’s Chief Development Officer. “They’ve gone above and beyond to support our mission and help shelter pets, and their dedication to helping veterans is simply heartwarming,” Carpenter added. Veterans wishing to learn more about adopting a pet from Humane Indiana may contact the shelter at 219.922.3811.

Majestic Star Casino, Jewel-Osco, and the Chicago radio stations 101.9 The Mix, The New SHE 100.3 and 97.1 FM The Drive are partnering with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana to provide Thanksgiving dinners to 1,000 needy families Thursday.

“Hunger becomes more apparent during the holidays. Low-income families that rely on consistent meals for their children through free and reduced school lunch programs are likely to experience a strain on their budget with having to provide additional groceries. Increased child-care costs factor in as well, with parents working, and children being off during the break,” Food Bank of Northwest Indiana President Bob Lowry said. “With the generosity of partners like Jewel-Osco, Majestic Star Casino and Hubbard Radio, our ability to address hunger in the community during the holidays is amplified.”

The Thanksgiving Community Care-a-Van will distribute the meals to needy people and families from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at YWCA of Northwest Indiana at 150 W. 15th. Ave. in Gary and from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana at 6490 Broadway in Merrillville, until supplies run out. The meal includes a turkey, vegetables and other traditional sides.

It’s first-come, first-served and open to any Northwest Indiana residents in need of food distribution.
“Helping people who are in need has been a long-held initiative for Jewel-Osco,” Jewel-Osco President Mike Withers said. “We are fortunate to partner with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, Hubbard Radio and Majestic Star Casino and Hotel to give back this holiday season.”

Great things are on the horizon for the entire Lake County area and we urge industry leaders; those companies that look like us, those companies that prosper here, to reinforce their commitment to this community by matching our donation to the YWCA and other non-profit organizations,” said Erpenbach.

Caren Jones, executive director of the YWCA stated, “Since its inception in 1920, the YWCA of Northwest Indiana has worked to improve the health and education of families and individuals in our community.
